Athleticism – How do I continue to stay fit and be the athlete I’ve always been as I enter my mid 40’s? That is a great question, and in frustration have asked myself on a daily basis for several years now.
Ahhh, the good ole’ days. I was a great athlete, being named “Best All Around Athlete” by all my coaches in high school. My college career was great too, named “Academic All- American”. I continued to stay active into my late 20’s, until I decided to have my first child. Having always been fit, I continued to eat whatever I wanted. But, being less active, I started putting on the weight. Then I hit my 30’s, more kids and even less physically active. The pounds just kept coming.
Next thing I know, kids are all in school, I’m nearing my 40’s, not active at all, high
cholesterol, 80 lbs overweight and, now let’s add, depressed. I look in the mirror and don’t even recognize me. How did I let this happen? How do I get that athlete back? Where do I go from here? What do I need to do to feel “good and healthy” again? All questions that continued to haunt me.
Then I remembered something my father, also my basketball coach, always told me when things got tough, “You want something bad enough, you’ve got to have ‘the eye of the tiger’ and go get it!” So that’s what I am in the process of doing. I am back to working out 5-6 days a week, playing basketball, volleyball, running, swimming and eating healthy. I have lost 42 lbs, and am working on chipping away at the rest.
